My wife Susie and I have three children Zach, Alex, Piper.  Zach is an officer in the Air Force.  Alex is a student at Mississippi State University (So the nest begins to empty).  Piper is in middle school and doing great!  Susie is the glue that keeps it all going while still investing in the women of our church and teaching 4th grade at Gulf Point Latin School.  She is quite impressive.

What do you do or how do you serve at Live Oak Church

As an Elder, I pastor the church with the other Elders.  This includes joining with them to Teach, Lead, and Care for the body.  My primary role is teaching on Sunday Morning, Children’s Ministry Director, and Catalyst for moving forward.

Favorite passage of scripture or Life Verse

At different times and stages in life God has used His specific verses to encourage, convict, and train me.   I often return to Jeremiah 17:7-8 for inspiration and challenge to be like a tree who isn’t affected by fear nor stress during times of drought because I am near the water (Spirit) and still bearing fruit.  Life is not always easy but we do not fear its difficulties for our God is always bearing fruit in those planted near the Living Water.

Authors you read from/Favorite books

Some of the men whose writings have influenced me are J. Piper, D. Platt, RC Sproul, T. Keller, J. MacArthur, A.Murray, CS Lewis, W. Grudem, J. Adams, CJ Mahaney, JM Boice, A. Strauch, M.Chandler.

The books God has used recently in my life are “Humility” by C.J. Mahaney; “Living a Prayerful Life” by A. Murray; and “Counter Culture” by D. Platt

Who has inspired you and why

I have been blessed to have regularly had Christian adults to influence me at the different stages of maturity. I have served under some great pastors and with some really faithful believers. In addition, the writings of such men as John Piper and John McArthur have moved me to a greater love of sound doctrine.  My wife and friends (Andy C and Jeff N) have walked with me during important times, always pointing me to Christ and asking hard question when appropriate. These times have inspired me to steadfast faith.

Hobbies/favorite pastime

I love spending my free time on sports (college is my favorite but all sports are great), fantasy baseball, reading, going to movies, game nights with friends, golf (the few times it works out), gym (too few times of working out), and my family.

My wife Amanda and I recently celebrated our 24th anniversary.  We have 5 great kids Ashleigh (20), Caleb (18), Noah (14), Micah (11), and Bethany (10).  Ashleigh and Caleb are attending college and Amanda homeschools the other three, which pretty much consumes every waking moment.

What do you do or how do you serve at Live Oak Church

As an Elder, I pastor the church with the other Elders.  Specifically, I handle the business administration of the church, oversee the youth ministry, lead our Life Group ministry, and occasionally preach.

Favorite passage of scripture or Life Verse

Hebrews 11:26 is my life verse because it continually reminds me of the very purpose of life. The author of Hebrews is recounting all of the heroes of the faith and in speaking of Moses he writes “He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward.”  I am amazed when I consider the vast wealth of Egypt at the time and compare that to the value of suffering for Christ.  Then I find the reason that he would make such a valuation to be of great encouragement.  He was not living for this life.  He was looking to the reward of eternity in the presence of the infinitely glorious Christ and said “that is far greater.”  No other verse of scripture has called me back to true living more regularly than this one.

Authors you read from/Favorite books

I have been fed glorious truths about God by men like John Piper, John MacArthur, R.C. Sproul, John Owen, C.S. Lewis, Jonathan Edwards, Randy Alcorn, and many others.  Two of the best books I have read recently are God is the Gospel by John Piper and The Enemy Within by Kris Lundgaard.

Who has inspired you and why

I have been inspired by numerous people.  Those who have invested in me and many of those in whom I have invested and lived life with are far too many to name.  Two men who have been consistently faithful to walk through all of life with me are Pat Howell and Jeff Nettles.  My wife is my greatest encourager.

Hobbies/favorite pastime

I love spending time with family and friends.  The one thing that I consider my escape is to dominate in Fantasy Baseball (BTW, fantasy football is not true fantasy competition:))

Favorite passage of scripture or Life Verse

A passage that has really inspired me in my walk is Psalm 51:10-12.  During this time, King David had reached one of the darkest times in his life recorded in scripture with his affair and subsequent murder of the woman’s husband. In this chapter, he calls out to God to “create in me a clean heart”. I am in awe of how God listens to our cry, and then answers with grace and mercy we do not deserve. This is one of the many reasons he deserves my constant, honest worship.

Authors you read from/Favorite books

I have read many books over the years by fantastic authors, but for the past couple of years, I’ve had my focus on really learning and understanding the Bible. Most of the these authors are also pastors/preachers, so I have subscribed to quite a few podcasts and listened to them expound over Bible teaching as a supplement. Currently, I am listening to Matt Chandler, John Piper, Francis Chan, John MacArthur, David Platt, and Paul Washer.

Who has inspired you and why

Many people have contributed to my life in significant ways. I am blessed to have been surrounded with such interesting and loving people. James Ross has been a huge inspiration to me personally and my family in general. He has shared God’s wisdom, truth, and grace with me on a regular basis and I could not be more thankful for it.

Hobbies/favorite pastime

One of my favorite hobbies is to go to a park and take in the scenes. Whether it is people watching or playing my guitar, I love the peacefulness of parks in general. I also love spending time with close friends, watching sports, or playing/writing/listening to music.
